Your garage door is probably the heaviest moving object in your home, and most Sydney households use it several times a day. Because it works so reliably, safety checks are easy to forget. At Emu Garage Doors, we see the same problem again and again: one feature matters more than any other, and that’s auto-reverse.
If your door can’t sense an obstruction and reverse, it can injure a child or a pet, or crush a bike or car bumper. The good news is that you can test it yourself in about two minutes. Here’s how, and what to do if your door fails.
What Is Auto-Reverse, and Why Does It Matter?
Auto-reverse is a safety function built into modern automatic garage doors. If the door meets resistance while closing, it stops and travels back up. Most openers use two systems to do this:
- Force sensing: the opener detects resistance and reverses the door.
- Photoelectric sensors: a beam near the base of the door triggers a reversal if something breaks it.
Both can drift out of adjustment or wear over time. A door that passed easily at installation may not be safe today. If you want the bigger picture, we’ve explained the key garage door safety features every homeowner should know.
How to Test Your Auto-Reverse in 2 Minutes
You’ll need a roll of paper towel or a small piece of timber. Never use your hands, feet or any part of your body.
Step 1: Test the Obstruction Reversal
- Open the door fully.
- Lay the object flat on the ground in the center of the door’s path.
- Close the door using the remote or wall button.
- Watch what happens when the door touches the object.
Pass: the door stops and reverses straight away.
Fail: the door stops but doesn’t reverse, pushes down on the object, or keeps closing.
Step 2: Test the Photoelectric Sensors
- With the door open, start closing it.
- Pass a broom handle (never your hand or foot) through the sensor beam near the bottom of the door.
- The door should stop and reverse immediately.
If nothing happens, wipe both sensor lenses with a soft cloth and check that they face each other directly. Dust, spiders, and a knocked bracket are common culprits. If the door still ignores the beam, it needs professional attention.
Step 3: Check the Manual Release
Make sure you can disconnect the door from the opener and lift it by hand. You want to know this works before a power outage, not during one.
How Often Should You Test It?
We recommend testing every six months, and also after:
- A power surge or blackout
- A new opener, remote or limit adjustment
- Any bump or impact to the door
- Spring, cable or track repairs
Sydney’s coastal humidity and summer heat are hard on springs, rollers, and electronics. A yearly garage door service alongside your own twice-yearly test catches most problems before they become hazards.
Why Do Garage Doors Fail the Test?
If your door failed, one of these is usually the cause:
- Force settings too high: the opener ignores light resistance.
- Misaligned or damaged sensors: the most common cause of photoelectric failure.
- Worn motor or circuit board: older openers lose accuracy over time.
- Unbalanced door: worn springs or cables put extra strain on the opener.
- Damaged tracks or rollers: these make the door drag and confuse the sensing system.
Some of these are quick fixes. Others are not. Springs and cables are under extreme tension, which is why a broken spring should always be handled by a licensed technician. We’ve also written about the risks of DIY garage door work if you’re tempted to try it yourself.
When Is a Failed Test an Emergency?
A door that won’t reverse is a hazard, not just an inconvenience. Stop using the opener, operate the door manually if you need to, and keep children and pets well clear.
If the door is stuck open, won’t close or has come off its tracks, our guide on what counts as a garage door emergency will help you decide how urgently to act. For anything else, our team can arrange garage door repairs in Sydney quickly, including opener faults.
Is Your Opener Too Old to Be Safe?
If your opener is more than 10 to 15 years old, or it keeps failing the test after a service, replacing it usually makes more sense than repeated repairs. Newer models offer reliable auto-reverse, battery backup and app control, and our post on the benefits of smart garage door openers explains what’s worth having. We can also repair or install your opener if it’s time for a change.
Repair or Replace the Whole Door?
Sometimes the door itself is the problem. If it’s noisy, uneven or repeatedly failing safety checks, a replacement may cost less over time than constant repairs. If you’re weighing up styles, our roller door vs sectional door comparison covers the pros and cons for Sydney homes.
